The openSUSE project release team has published the first milestone of version 12.2 of its Linux distribution. The development milestone is the first of four planned milestone builds, which will be followed by a beta and two release candidates. According to the project's Factory Portal page, the final version of openSUSE 12.2 is scheduled to arrive in mid-July 2012.
Aimed at developers and testers, openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 1 contains very few changes; its developers say that the main goal of the release was "to find all the places that need to be changed from 12.1 to 12.2". Other changes include updated artwork, a new version of the open source Firefox web browser and upgrading the KDE desktop environment to version 4.8. A list of known issues can be found on the most annoying bugs page.
The availability of the first milestone release on the way towards openSUSE 12.2: "With the release of milestone 1, the development of openSUSE 12.2 has started. Milestone 1 contains many minor updates, like a new Firefox version but also major things like new artwork and KDE 4.8. Our release manager, Stephan 'Coolo' Kulow said: 'There have been enough weeks without another release, so I started now with uploading milestone 1 of 12.2. The main purpose of this release is to find all the places that need to be changed from 12.1 to 12.2 - the branding already made a great start. Milestone 1 sure looks great - and different to 12.1 already at this early stage. Great work, artwork team.' The release announcement.
